Contests vs. Sweepstakes
There are major differences between contests and sweepstakes—differences that could be legally detrimental if you're not careful. In a nutshell, contests are games of skill whereas sweepstakes are games of chance.
Here's a better explanation of each:
Contests call for consumers to submit some sort of entry that is to be judged and ultimately where someone wins for meeting x criteria or by doing something "better" than the other contestants. Contests usually require a lot more on the legal side of things to pull off and often times require an entry fee.
Sweepstakes are usually easier to operate and are games of chance. The odds of winning are always much lower in a sweepstakes than in a contest. There can be no competitive contest involved in a sweepstakes nor can you charge an entry fee (which would be considered illegal gambling).
