Public Relations (PR)
Typical Public Relations Function
PR is probably the most misunderstood and underused component of the marketing mix.
PR is exactly what it says: public relations. You're engaging the public; you're networking; you're building a fan base. Of course, in a worst case scenario, PR can mean you're managing crises both internally and externally.
With its many years of PR experience, Marketing Max can help you to better understand where PR fits into your overall strategic plan—and there's always a place for it. We'll help you set goals and expectations rather than make false promises of getting you on 'Oprah' the day after tomorrow to showcase your new product.
PR is extremely strategic and a good PR plan requires... well... a lot of planning. Understanding how both the media and the public behave in certain situations and how they react to certain topics is critical. And anyone who tells you that any PR is good PR doesn't understand PR.
Because PR is a part of the marketing mix, its mission must remain true to that of the marketing mix: to build long-lasting and profitable customer relationships. Having your name in lights or in your favorite magazine means nothing if, in the end, you're not acquiring new or retaining existing customers.
SEO PR vs. Public Relations
"Search Engine Optimized Press Releases" or SEO PR means that a press release is written strictly as search engine "spider food." In other words, the press release is developed using a slew of keywords and phrases in hopes that the search engines will crawl the document and then rank it higher because it "appears" to be relevant to specific keywords and phrases.
As we've explained above, true public relations is more than a simple press release. And while you can certainly develop a press release with your SEO goals in mind, we actually categorize that under Online Marketing; not Public Relations.
Journalists who've been around for a while can certainly tell the difference between an SEO press release and on that was written with a mission to inform. Many journalists will also blacklist you for sending them what they call "SEO Garbage."
Don't burn bridges. Distribute your press releases to their appropriate targets.
